TCU Men Down SMU 84-76
DALLAS (AP) - Ryan Carroll scored all 17 of his points in the second half to key TCU's 84-76 victory over SMU on Saturday.
SMU (18-11, 8-8 Western Athletic) led the entire first half and went into halftime with a 40-30 lead, its largest lead of the game. The Mustangs led 49-43 with 13:30 to play, but TCU (20-10, 9-7) went on a 17-4 run over the next 5 1/2 minutes for a 60-53 advantage and never trailed again.
SMU pulled within two points on two occasions in the final minute, but TCU hit all eight of its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
TCU shot only 29 percent from the field in the first half, but improved to 48 percent in the second half.
Bingo Merriex had 17 points and 12 rebounds for TCU, while Nucleus Smith and Derrick Davenport had 16 points each.
Jeryl Sasser led SMU with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists and was one of five Mustangs to score in double figures.
Damon Hancock added 15 points and four assists, but committed six turnovers.
