Frogs snap three-game skid with 83-59 triumph over Texas Southern
Dec. 8, 2007
The TCU men's basketball program snapped its three-game losing skid en route to improving to 5-3 on the season with an 83-59 victory over Texas Southern at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Saturday (Dec. 8). In the early moments of the game, the Tigers came out of the gates strong as Texas Southern was able to build a one-point advantage at 5-2 advantage over the home squad following a three-pointer by Sollie Norwood at the 17:03 mark. After facing three straight games of obstacles, the Frogs wouldn't let the Tigers' lead last too long as the Purple and White overtook the scoreboard advantage at the 14:28 mark following a three-pointer by Henry Salter (Gulfport, Miss./Mississippi Gulf Coast College). Salter finished with 14 points in the contest on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with five rebounds in 26 minutes of action. While the Frogs held the advantage on the scoreboard, they had trouble pulling away from the visiting squad in the middle of the first half as the visiting squad was able to get within four points at 16-12 following a lay-in by David Burrell. With the lead down to four points, the Frogs began their strong shooting as the Purple and White went on a 12-0 run over a three minute span to take a 26-12 lead at the 7:46 mark following a pair of free throws by John Oritz (Cali, Colombia/Colby C.C.). Following their scoring burst, the Frogs continued to hold a double-digit advantage over the Tigers and held a 41-29 lead heading into intermission. In the second half of action, the Frogs came out aggressive and took a 21-point lead at the 13:53 mark following a three-pointer by TCU senior Ryan Wall (Coppell, Texas/Coppell H.S.). Wall finished with nine points in the game on 3-of-4 shooting - all three-pointers - 11 minutes of action.
The Purple and White continued to hold a double-digit advantage over their opponents for the remainder of the game and cruised to a 24-point home victory over the Tigers.
Kevin Langford (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) led the Frogs with 15 points, including 5-of-6 from the free throw line, to go along with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot in 28 minutes of action. Brent Hackett (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest H.S.) added 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers, and four assists and two steals in 31 minutes of court time. The Frogs connected on 49.2 percent (31-of-63) of their field goal attempts, including 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from behind the three-point arc, while Texas Southern drained 42.6 percent (26-of-61) of their attempts, but only 20.0 percent (4-of-20) of their three-point tries. The Frogs' defense forced the Tigers commit 25 turnovers in the contest, which resulted in a 39-6 advantage in points off of turnovers for the home squad. The Purple and White, who came into the contest ranked 13th in the nation in rebounds per game, continued their dominance on the boards as the Frogs grabbed 42 rebounds compared to 33 for the visiting squad. Sollie Norwood led the Tigers with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds in 40 minutes of action while Matthew Miller chipped in with 10 points, three steals, two assists and two rebounds in 24 minutes of court time. The Frogs will be back in action on Monday (Dec. 17) when the Purple and White plays host to Southland Conference-opponent University of Texas-Arlington.
