Dec 4, 2001
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Bingo Merriex scored 22 points and TCU made 13 free throws in the last five minutes to hold off Creighton 82-77 Tuesday night.
Nucleus Smith's two free throws with 1:40 to play gave the Horned Frogs the lead for good. Smith was 0-for-2 from the field, but made 11 of his 12 free throws. Thirteen of TCU's 17 points over the last five minutes came from free throws.
TCU (5-3) led at the half 40-37.
Kyle Korver led Creighton (3-1) with 25 points on 8-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. He also had 9 rebounds.
Marlon Dumont added 18 points and 9 rebounds for TCU.
The Blue Jays outscored TCU from the field, but had only 21 free throws, making 14 of them, while the Horned Frogs went to the line 35 times, making 28.
"My teams are normally good free-throw shooting teams," said head coach Billy Tubbs. "Sometimes you wonder how they will do down the stretch, but this year we have been able to knock them down."
The latter part of the second half saw both teams exchange the team numerous times. TCU's largest was a six-point cushion (81-75) with 12 seconds remaining. Creighton held a three-point lead (67-64) with a little over five minutes remaining. In the final five minutes, there were five ties and four lead changes.
"This was a big win for us," said Tubbs. "Creighton came ready to play. They have been to the NCAA tournament three straight years, so it is a program that we have a lot of respect for. They were 3-0 and had beaten a ranked team in Western Kentucky, so we are excited to have this win."
TCU will return to action on Saturday, December, 8, when they host Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference game.
