TCU Basketball Outlasts Washington State 86-83

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs (2-1) edged the Washington State Cougars (2-1) by the final score of 86-83 on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 4,359 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. In a game that featured 21 lead changes, the Horned Frogs took the advantage for good with 3:35 remaining on a three-pointer by sophomore Corey Santee. Santee was key down the stretch for TCU, scoring 16 of his game-high 23 points after intermission. Fellow guard Junior Blount iced the Frog victory with a pair of free throws with :25 left. After Washington State cut the lead to one with eight ticks remaining, Blount's layup with under a second left gave the Frogs a three-point win. TCU trailed 48-42 at the intermission after a see-saw first half. The Cougars' six-point advantage at the end of the first 20 minutes was the largest lead for either team in the stanza. Washington State shot 57.6 percent (19-for-33) from the field in the first half, which included a 6-for-10 mark from three-point range. In the second half, the Cougars cooled to 37.8 percent shooting and hit just 2-of-11 shots from behind the arc. Three other Frogs: Blount (18), Marcus Sloan (13) and Chudi Chinweze (12) reached double figures in the win. The point totals for Sloan and Chinweze were career highs. In the second half, senior Bingo Merriex became the 25th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Merriex, who did not start due to a groin injury, scored nine points in 30 minutes of play.
TCU was outrebounded 50-34, but won the game at the charity stripe, making 13 more free throws than Washington State (22-9). Washington State's Marcus Moore had 21 points to lead the Cougars.
