Broadway called up by White Sox

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox, who moved into first place Sunday in the American League Central Division, have bolstered their pitching staff for the pennant stretch by recalling former TCU All-American Lance Broadway from Triple-A Charlotte. The 15th-overall pick of the White Sox in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Broadway went 1-1 with a 0.87 ERA in four games for Chicago last year as a September call-up. He was 10-7 with a 4.68 ERA in Charlotte this season. Broadway is expected to work out of the bullpen for the White Sox. Chicago's pitching staff recently saw starter Jose Contreras suffer a season-ending injury. "You never know when or how it's gonna happen, but you'll definitely take it," Broadway told MLB.com. "I think any Minor Leaguer would agree with that. You'll take it any way you can get it." In the 2005 TCU campaign, Broadway recorded the top season by a pitcher in TCU history with a 15-1 record and 1.62 ERA. He struck out a school record 151 batters and walked just 35 in 117 innings, holding opponents to a .191 batting average. Broadway was a consensus All-American and a finalist for the Roger Clemens Award, Xanthas-Dick Howser Trophy and Brooks Wallace Award. He was named the 2004-05 Conference USA Male Athlete of the Year. The TCU ace amassed two impressive streaks without allowing an earned run in 2005. The first lasted 36 2/3 innings and spanned seven appearances (six starts, one relief outing), during which he struck out 52, walked six and allowed just 28 hits. The second streak went 25 2/3 innings and included four starts. He struck out 32, walked five and allowed 13 hits before allowing a run. With Geno Espineli's recent call-up by the San Francisco Giants, TCU now has two former hurlers active in the major leagues.
