Huffman honored by Rivals.com
June 26, 2006 FORT WORTH, Texas - Chad Huffman, a first-team all-Mountain West Conference performer, has been named Honorable Mention All-America by Rivals.com. The junior utility player is the one of just two Mountain West Conference representatives on the three-team squad. Huffman becomes the first Horned Frog position player to earn all-American honors since Terry Trofholz was named second-team all-American in 2002. He was honored by Baseball America, Louisville Slugger and the NCBWA earlier this month as a third-team All-American. On June 6, the junior was drafted in the second round with the 53rd overall pick by the San Diego Padres. He signed with San Diego on June 22 and is currently playing for the Padres Class A Short-Season club, Eugene Emeralds. In his professional debut on June 24, Huffman went 1-for-4 with a home run. The Padres are planning to make him a left fielder. Huffman was the hottest hitter for the Frogs this season, helping lead them to the Mountain West regular season and tournament titles for the first time in school history. He has put together hitting streaks of 22 and 15 games. He lead the team with a .388 batting average in 57 games played. He missed six starts with a pulled hamstring in March. He drove in a career-high 71 runs to pace the squad and connected for a career-high 18 home runs. While hitting for power, the junior showed his patience at the plate as he drew team-high 38 bases on balls. Along with putting up some gaudy numbers in 2006, Huffman steadily climbed the career charts in 2006 and ranks second in most offensive categories behind his brother, Royce. He ranks second all-time in hits (263), runs scored (180), total bases (439) and doubles (49). He is third all-time with 39 career home runs. New Mexico's Danny Ray Herrera was also named an Honorable Mention All-American by Rivals.com
