TCU's Eugene Espineli Selected in 14th Round Of Major League Draft
June 7, 2004 Fort Worth, Texas - TCU pitcher Eugene Espineli was the first Horned Frog selected in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft on Monday. The senior was drafted by the San Francisco Gaints as the 29th pick of the 14th round and the 430th player taken overall. Espineli appeared in 20 games for the Frogs this season and moved into the starting rotation after two appearances out of the bullpen. He was 9-5 in 16 starts, picking up wins over Texas Tech and Oklahoma. He was a big factor in the Frogs success in the Conference USA Tournament, making the all-tournament team with two wins in the tournament. He was second on the team in innings pitched with 107.0 and recorded 88 strikeouts. He finished the season with a 4.63 ERA. "We are so very excited for Eugene and this opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a major league player," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "It was great to see him develop in our program this year and we wish him the best of luck. I have no doubt that he will represent very well."
The draft will continue Tuesday with rounds 19-50.
