Krizan Lifts Dallas Baptist Past Sooners In Extra Innings
June 3, 2011
FORT WORTH, Texas - Dallas Baptist senior right fielder Jason Krizan broke open a tie game with an infield RBI single in the top of the 10th inning during a 3-2 Patriot victory over No. 2 seed Oklahoma in Game 1 of the NCAA Fort Worth Regional at TCU's Lupton Stadium.
Third-seeded DBU, which improved to 40-17 on the season, advanced to play the winner of Friday's 7 p.m. matchup between top seed TCU and No. 4 seed Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Sooners, who dropped to 41-18, will face the loser of the TCU-ORU matchup at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Krizan's single to shortstop with one out brought home senior second baseman Tyler Robbins to cap a last-ditch rally for Dallas Baptist, which scored runs in back-to-back innings after trailing 2-1 entering the ninth. Krizan had alsodriven home the winning run in the two teams' only previous meeting this season, a 3-2 DBU victory in Norman, Okla., back on April 19.
It looked as if Oklahoma was primed to avenge that earlier defeat, but Dallas Baptist was able to keep its hopes alive with a late ninth-inning rally. After junior first baseman Ryan Behmanesh opened the frame with a single to left field, sophomore left fielder Austin Elkins drove him home from second base with a two-out single to tie the game at 2-2.
The Sooners took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the seventh inning, as junior catcher Tyler Ogle delivered an RBI single with two outs that scored senior second baseman Cale Ellis. Ellis reached base earlier in the inning after being hit by a pitch from DBU righthander Brandon Williamson.
The errant pitch was one of few mistakes by Williamson, who turned in a brilliant effort on the mount to earn his 10th victory. Williamson went nine innings, giving up only seven hits and two runs while striking out seven. Senior righthander Chris Haney pitched the 10th inning to earn his 13th save.
Also turning in a sterling pitching performance was OU senior righthander Michael Rocha, who earned a no decision after 7 1/3 innings of five-hit ball that saw him allow only a DBU first-inning run. Redshirt freshman righthander Jordan John took the loss after being tagged for three hits in the final third of an inning, including Krizan's winning hit.
Krizan finished the contest 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs for the Patriots, including an RBIdouble the opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. The double marked his 38th this season, which is the NCAA single-season record. Elkins and junior center fielder Landon Anderson also added a pair of hits for thePatriots.
Junior first baseman Cameron Seitzer and junior center fielder Eric Ross led OU's offensive attack, as both Sooners reached base three times with a pair of hits each. Junior third baseman Garrett Buechele added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth that tied the game at 1-1 while plating Ellis.
