Winkler Named 3rd-Team Louisville Slugger All-American
June 2, 2011
FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU junior pitcher Kyle Winkler has been named a third-team All-American by Louisville Slugger. The honor is the first of his career.
Winkler has enjoyed a tremendous junior campaign. In 13 appearances, he has posted an 8-2 record to go along with a miniscule 1.40 ERA. All 12 of his starts this season have lasted at least six innings and he has tossed two complete games. In a team-high 90 innings pitched, Winkler has fanned 98 batters and is limiting opponents to just a .201 batting average against. His outstanding season was honored as he was selected first-team all-conference. Earlier this week, Winkler was named one of 30 semifinalists for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award.
Winkler is the ninth player under head coach Jim Schlossnagle to earn All-American accolades. Since Schlossnagle arrived on campus in 2004, he has produced seven All-American pitchers (Robbie Findlay, 2004; Lance Broadway, 2005; Jake Arrieta, 2006; Andrew Cashner, 2008; Matt Purke, 2010; Steven Maxwell, 2010; Kyle Winkler, 2011).
The Mountain West Conference had three All-Americans this season. Utah's C.J. Cron was selected as a first-team All-Amercian, while UNLV's Tanner Peters was named third-team All-American.
