June 1, 2010
FORT WORTH, Texas - Baseball player Jantzen Witte and Track and Field's Larissa Matthews have been selected as TCU's Athletes of the Week for their recent efforts.
Witte was one of the top performers for TCU at last weekend's Mountain West Conference Baseball Tournament. Witte's tournament batting average was.545, and he also produced a team-high .583 on-base percentage.
In the opening game of the tournament, a 13-2 win over Utah, Witte went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and he scored one run. In Thursday's 5-2 victory over UNLV, Witte went 1 for 3 with a walk and one run scored. In the championship game win over New Mexico, Witte went 2-for-3 and drove in the second and final run of the game.
For Matthews, a freshman from Chandler, Ariz., it was a weekend to remember. In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Matthews qualified for her first NCAA semifinal in Eugene, Ore. at the West Preliminary Round, smashing the school record in the event with a personal-best time of 13.26 seconds.
Matthews, who heads to the semifinal round ranked in the top 20 in the NCAA, is the only freshman in the nation to qualify for the semifinals. She finished third in heat No. 1 and seventh overall with the sixth-fastest time clocked in the quarterfinals in Austin. By clocking a 13.26, Matthews broke MaKeatha Cooper's previous school record of 13.35 seconds, which was set in 2004.
