Feb. 13, 2013
FORT WORTH - Entering the 10th season of the Jim Schlossnagle era at TCU, gofrogs.com will travel back in time to bring you the top 10 games of his coaching tenure.
Each Wednesday we will bring you another memory from the past nine seasons of TCU Baseball. The list was compiled with the help of the TCU media relations department and radio announcer Chuck LaMendola.
No. 10 on the list is the Horned Frogs come-from-behind victory over BYU in the 2007 MWC Championship game.
May 26, 2007: TCU 9, BYU 8
LAS VEGAS - With two outs in the ninth inning and down by five runs, the No. 18 TCU Horned Frogs needed a rally to beat the BYU Cougars and win their second consecutive Mountain West Conference title.
Earlier in the ninth, Clint Arnold hit a double and Steven Trout walked to put two runners on base. Then Frogs' outfielder Austin Adams approached the plate, and crushed his 14th homerun of the season, tying the game at eight. After the impressive hit, Andrew Walker hits a double that Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle remembers.
Schlossnagle recalls that Walker tried to stretch out the double and after sliding into second he thought Walker was hurt. Schlossnagle goes over to check on his player only to hear the junior say, "I'm ok, just need to catch my breath."
The next at bat, Matt Vern battled the Cougar's pitcher, Matt Jensen, for 12 pitches. Vern, a sophomore then, kept telling himself to keep the ball in right-center field. And he did just that. On the last at pitch of the at bat, Vern got the fastball he was looking for and singled in the game winning run.
Chance Corgan started the game for the Horned Frogs. BYU got four hits in the first inning; leading to a quick 3-0 Cougar lead. They tacked on another run in the third with a sacrifice fly. TCU finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third on a Ben Carruthers single that brought in Bryan Kervin.
After giving up two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, Keith Conlon smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to bring the game to 6-2.
Then in the top of the fifth inning, Donald Furrow would stop the BYU offense after giving up two runs. In the bottom of the frame, the Frogs got two more runs off of a RBI single from Trout and a Conlon fielder's choice.
The score would stay 8-5 until the bottom of the ninth when the Frogs rallied for their final four runs. After pitching only a third of the ninth inning, Steven Maxwell got the win.
The win would put the Frogs into their fourth straight NCAA Regional Tournament under Schlossnagle.
