Newburn Pitches TCU Past UAB, 8-0
May 3, 2002
FORT WORTH, Texas - Led by a shutout performance from Patrick Newburn (Grapevine, Texas/Grapevine/Northeast Texas J.C.), TCU baseball ran past UAB 8-0 Friday afternoon at TCU Diamond. The win was just TCU's third in its last 10 games and upped the Horned Frogs' record to 23-24 overall and 14-8 in Conference USA.
Newburn, who was pitching in place of TCU's regular Friday starter Clayton Jerome, recorded career highs with 10 strikeouts and nine innings pitched in the whitewash. He joined Jerome, whose start was delayed due to minor tightness in his throwing arm, as the only Frogs to hurl a nine-inning shutout this season. Newburn tossed a complete-game, 14-0 gem over Saint Louis on April 14, but the contest was called after seven innings due the ten-run rule.
The right-hander was shaky to start the game, allowing UAB's first two batters to reach base via a single and hit batter. However, he escaped the jam by forcing Blazer right fielder Eric Lyon to hit into a triple play that ended the threat.
The triple play unfolded as UAB base runners Matt Womble and Mitch Jones broke on the pitch from first and second base, respectively, in a hit-and-run attempt. However, Lyon roped a line drive right at TCU first baseman Walter Olmstead (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur) for the first out. He then touched first base to retire Womble and tossed the ball to shortstop Levi Robinson (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service/Canada C.C.), who stepped on second to retire Jones and complete TCU's first triple play since Feb. 6, 1999 versus Centenary.
That would be the spark the TCU offense would need, as the Frogs plated three runs in the bottom of the first to grab a 3-0 lead. Third baseman Mike Settle (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day) has the inning's big hit, a two-run single up the middle which put the Purple and White ahead for good.
From there, it was all Newburn as he held UAB (14-31, 5-17 C-USA) to just three hits over the next seven innings, at one point sitting down 13-straight Blazers.
The Frogs continued to pile on to the lead, plating a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and an final tally in the seventh to account for the final margin. Robinson's third home run of the year, a two-run shot in the fifth, highlighted the scoring.
In addition to Settle and Robinson's two RBI each, second baseman Will Lewis (Texarkana, Ark./ Texarkana/Seminole J.C.) and center fielder Marshall Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) each enjoyed 3-for-4 days at the plate to lead the Frogs' offensive efforts.
Additionally, right fielder Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior/Creighton) lined an RBI single into right center field in the fourth inning to extend his TCU season-long hitting streak to 20 games. The nation's third-leading hitter with a .474 batting average, Trofholz has also hit safely in 28 of the last 29 contests and in 39 of his 43 starts this year. His 82nd hit this campaign moved the junior into a tie for seventh on TCU's all-time single-season hit list.
TCU and UAB will square off again Saturday in game two of the three-game C-USA set. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. at TCU Diamond.
