Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The TCU Horned Frogs scored in all but two innings en route to a 16-5 victory over San Diego State Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory was highlighted by an offensive explosion that saw the Frogs notch seven extra base hits, including three home runs as the Frogs scored 16 times on 16 hits. Chris Ellington led the Frog attack with four hits and two RBIs, while Matt Vern connected for a home run and drove in four.

A two-out single from Chris Ellington got the scoring started for the Horned Frogs in the top of the first inning. Bryan Kervin worked a one-out walk and stole second with only one out. Clint Arnold flew out to deep right, moving Kervin to third where he trotted home on Ellington's base hit up the middle.

TCU made it a 2-0 contest in the second, scoring a run on two hits. Steve Ellington led off the inning with a double but was erased trying to score on a ground ball off the bat of Matt Carpenter. The Frogs kept the pressure on as Carpenter successfully stole second and Hunt Woodruff came through with a double to deep left field to plate Carpenter.

With one out in the third, the Frogs connected for three straight hits as they opened up a 4-0 lead. Kervin started the rally and moved to second on an Arnold base knock. Chris Ellington drove in his second run of the game as the Frogs executed a perfect hit-and-run. With both runners in scoring position, Steve Ellington drove a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in the second run of the inning.

The Aztecs finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, picking up a run on three hits, but TCU starter Sean Hoelscher (5-2) battled through, getting Troy Hanzawa to line out to end the inning.

Vern got the run back and added another as he unloaded for his fourth home run of the season. Woodruff walked with one out and Vern deposited the first pitch of his at-bat over the left field wall for a 6-1 TCU lead. Bryan Kervin kept the inning going with a two-out line drive home run over the right field fence to push the lead to 7-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

San Diego State picked up another run in the fourth, but again, the Frogs had an answer in the top of the fifth inning. TCU pushed across four runs on three hits in the frame. Chris Ellington doubled to open the inning and back-to-back one-out walks to Bryan Holaday and Carpenter loaded the bases. Woodruff greeted the new Aztec pitcher, Brett Miller, with a run-scoring single. Vern picked up two more RBIs with a single through the left side. Two wild pitches from Miller allowed Woodruff to score from second.

Another three-run inning, this time in the sixth, made it a 14-2 game. With two on and one out, Holaday picked up an RBI single. An errant throw by the first baseman sent in another run and Woodruff collected his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to right.

While his team kept putting up runs, Hoelscher did his part on the mound. The freshman went 6 2/3 innings in the victory. He allowed four runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out three.

Troy Hanzawa came through with a two-run two-out single in the seventh and Nick Romero reached on an error to keep the inning alive. With two on and two out in the bottom of seventh, Hoelscher gave way to Dillon Farish, who retired the only batter he faced to keep it a 14-4 contest.

TCU got the runs back on a two-run shot by Carpenter in the eighth inning to restore their 12 run lead.

Taylor Cragin pitched a scoreless eighth. The Aztecs picked up a run on two hits in the bottom of the ninth to account for the final score.

TCU improves to 28-15 on the season and moves back into a tie for first place in league standings with a 12-5 conference mark. The Frogs will go for the series victory on Sunday. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. (CST) as Greg Holle will take the mound for the Frogs.
