Frogs hold on for 9-7 win over UNLV

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs guaranteed themselves their second straight Mountain West Conference series win with a 9-7 victory over UNLV on Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. TCU scored out hit UNLV 13-5 in the game. Chad Huffman was 2-for-5 at the plate, extending his career-long hit streak to 21 games. Brad Furnish went seven strong innings for his third win of the season.
TCU scored a run in each of the first four innings building a 5-1 lead over the Rebels. Bryan Kervin led off the first with a base knock to right. Steven Trout was safe at first on an error by the pitcher trying to field his sacrifice bunt. A double play ball moved Kervin to third and he scored on a wild pitch.
Two sacrifice bunts in the second inning helped TCU score its second run of the game. Austin Adams collected his sixth straight hit of the week to open the frame and moved to second on a Hunt Woodruff sacrifice. Corey Steglich singled to put runners on the corner for Ryan Pack, who dropped down another sacrifice bunt to score Adams.
Trout got the third inning going as he drew a lead-off walk and stole second, eventually scoring on a Huffman double. After Matt Carpenter reached on a fielder's choice, Keith Conlon singled to put two on with one out. Carpenter and Conlon executed a double steal and Adams walked to load the bases. Steglich walked to drive in the second run of the inning.
Keith Smith led off the Rebel fourth inning with a base hit and moved to second on a balk by Furnish. Two consecutive groundouts allowed Smith to score UNLV's first run of the game. Following the base hit by Smith, Furnish sat down the next nine batters he faced.
The Frogs got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a Huffman ground out that plated Kervin. Another run in the sixth made it a 6-1 ballgame as Conlon doubled home Carpenter.
UNLV began to inch back into the game in the seventh, scoring a single run on Ryan Bird sacrifice fly. But TCU would once again answer in the bottom of the inning, scoring three of its own to extend the lead to 9-2.
After two quick outs, five consecutives Horned Frogs reached base. Trout got the rally started with a single and Huffman doubled. A walk to Conlon loaded the bases and a wild pitch moved the runners up 90 feet. Adams delivered with a base hit that plated two runs.
The Rebels pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Chris Bonnell hit a two-run triple and scored on a Willie Bowman groundout.
Two more Rebel runs crossed the plate in the ninth before Sam Demel came on and shut the door. He retired two of the three men he faced to earn his second save of the season.
Furnish (3-5) went seven strong innings. He held the Rebels to two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out four.
The Frogs (21-11, 8-1 MWC) will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. at Lupton Stadium
