FORT WORTH, Texas - Another strong offensive performance guided the No. 16 TCU Horned Frogs to a 12-5 victory over Texas Tech Monday afternoon as the Frogs ran their win streak to four games. The Frogs scored 12 times on 15 hits, led by four hits from
Matt Curry. The junior drove in a career-high four runs and scored three times.
Texas Tech grabbed the early in the second, taking advantage of a lead-off walk to Taylor Ashby. Garrett Totten delivered the go-ahead single with one to give Texas Tech the 1-0 lead.
The Frogs responded, tying the game up in the bottom of the frame. Jason Coats doubled with one out and moved to third on a passed ball by Red Raider catcher Kevin Whitehead. The passed ball proved costly as Curry delivered a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at one.
TCU would go ahead for good with a three-run fourth as they opened up a 4-1 lead. Chris Ellington reached on an error to open the inning and moved to second on a base hit by Matt Vern. A Bryan Holaday sacrifice advanced both runners 90 feet and a walk to Coats loaded the bases. Curry delivered again with a two-run single to right center. Brance Rivera beat out a potential double play ball to drive in the third run of the inning.
Texas Tech got a run back in the top of the sixth, scoring a run on three hits to make it a 4-2 contest. Ashby drove in Joey Kenworthy, who had reached on a lead-off single.
Again, the Frogs would respond as they put a four-spot up in the bottom of the frame to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Curry led the inning off with his second hit and moved to second on a Rivera sacrifice. The hit parade began following the out as the next five Frogs reached base on four hits and an error. Corey Steglich delivered his first run-scoring hit to drive in Curry. Following a Taylor Featherston base knock, Matt Carpenter doubled in a run and Ellington drove in two more through a drawn in infield.
The Red Raiders put up a fight as they drew within 8-5 as they scored three runs on three hits in the seventh, but with the tying run at the plate, Eric Marshall came on and retired Whitehead to end the inning.
Curry's third hit of the night spurred another run-scoring inning as the Frogs gave themselves some breathing room with a 9-5 lead in the seventh. Featherston collected the RBI in the inning as he reached on a one out fielder's choice.
After Marshall retired the Red Raiders in order in the top of the eighth, the Frogs tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the inning to account for the final score. Vern doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a passed ball and wild pitch with one out. Curry drove in Coats with his fourth RBI of the game and scored on a Steglich base hit.
Derek VerHagen came on in the ninth and pitched a perfect frame to close out the contest.
Kyle Winkler improved to 3-0 on the season. He allowed two runs on three hits in five innings of work. Trent Appleby was touched for three runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Marshall retired all four batters he faced and stranded two inherited runners.
The Frogs improve to 23-10 on the season. They hit the road for four straight games beginning Tuesday night at No. 10 Oklahoma. First pitch at L. Dale Mitchell Park is slated for 7 p.m.
