Errors Prove Costly In Frogs 20-10 Loss To Oklahoma
April 13, 2005
Norman, Okla. - The No. 30 TCU Horned Frogs committed a school-record nine errors that cost them 11 unearned runs in a 20-10 loss on Tuesday night in Norman, Okla. For the Frogs, Matt McGuirk fell a single shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 at the plate with five runs driven in. The loss snapped the Frogs five-game winning streak and dropped them to a 6-7 record on the road. The lead flip-flopped through the first five innings before Oklahoma put up a three spot in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.
With one out in the first, McGuirk was hit by the pitch and Chad Huffman bounced back to the pitcher who threw to second where no one was covering and all hands were safe. Two consecutive wild pitches while J.J. Estrada stood in gave the Frogs the 1-0 lead. Estrada worked a nine-pitch walk to put runners on the corner with one out. Sooner starter Will Savage got a huge strikeout, but back-to-back two-singles from Andrew Walker and Austin Adams gave the Frogs the 3-0 lead.
The Sooners took the lead in the bottom of the inning, making a Frog error prove costly. Three of the Sooners four runs in the inning were unearned. A Kevin Smith base hit gave Oklahoma the 4-3 lead.
The lead didn't hold as the Frogs bats stayed hot in the second inning. McGuirk homered for the second straight game, smoking a three-run shot over the right field, giving TCU a 6-4 lead, ending Savage's day.
The Sooners once again battled back to tie the game, scoring two runs on three hits and two costly errors in the bottom of the second inning. They took the lead in the third, taking advantage of a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice, a single by Joe Dunigan put runners on the corner. A wild pitch by Demel allowed the go-ahead run to score, giving the Sooners the 7-6 lead.
The Frogs regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Estrada tied the game with a bases loaded single and Keith Conlon drew a bases loaded walk to give the Frogs the 8-7 lead. However, the Sooners would scored their fifth unearned run in the bottom of the inning to knot it at eight.
Once again the Frogs surged ahead, taking the lead on a triple by McGuirk that scored two runs. But two more errors ended up costing the Frogs the lead again as Oklahoma put a three spot on the board to take an 11-10 lead. The Sooners tacked on nine runs in their final two at-bats of the game to take the commanding 20-10 lead.
The Frogs (22-11) will wrap up a four-game road swing this weekend as they head to Memphis, Tenn. to take on the Memphis Tigers in Conference USA action. The three game series is slated to begin on Friday night at Nat Buring Stadium at 6:30 p.m. on the Memphis campus. Lance Broadway will go for his eighth win of the season for TCU.
