FORT WORTH, Texas - The New Mexico Lobos scored 10 runs in the final four innings to rally for a 10-5 victory over TCU Friday night at Lupton Stadium. The Horned Frog bullpen gave up eight of the 10 runs in the final three innings. Josh Elander led the Frog offense with three hits.
Kyle Winkler turned in his eighth quality start of the season. In the no-decision, he surrendered two runs on seven hits over six innings of work. The junior walked just one and struck out four. Stefan Crichton (2-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out two. Teddy Nowell was tagged for a pair of runs in 2/3 innings of work. He walked one and struck out one.
TCU struck with a two-out run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Elander was the first base runner of the night as he lined a single up the middle. After stealing second, he raced home on a bloop single to right center off the bat of Jerome Pena.
New Mexico made a bid to tie the game in the top of the third, but Aaron Schultz gunned out Quay Grant trying to score from second on a two-out single off the bat of Ben Woodchick.
In the sixth, the Lobo bats came to life as they pushed across two runs on three hits. Woodchick scored the tying run on a double from Alex Allbritton. With two on and two out, DJ Peterson lined a single to left to give New Mexico its first lead of the game, 3-2.
TCU came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead. Taylor Featherston singled to open the inning and Coats drew a walk. A bunt single by Jantzen Witte loaded the bases. Elander's third hit of the night tied the game at two. Zac Jordan ripped a sacrifice fly to center to give TCU the 3-2 lead.
The lead wouldn't hold as the Lobos tied the game in the seventh. New Mexico's first two batters reached and were in scoring position with only one out. Allbritton collected his second RBI of the night with a ground out to second that allowed Grant to score the tying run.
In the seventh, New Mexico pushed across three runs on four hits to regain a lead it wouldn't relinquish. With two on and one out, Luke Campbell broke the tie with a double that put the Lobos up 5-3. He scored on a triple off the bat of Sam Wilson to give New Mexico a 6-3 lead.
Four more runs crossed the plate for New Mexico in the ninth. The big blow was a bases-loaded double by Grant that made it a 10-3 game.
TCU attempted to get back in the game as four straight hitters reached base with one out. Brett Johnson collected a pinch hit single to start the rally and moved to second on a walk to Brance Rivera. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet and Schultz drove a single through the left side to drive in a run. Featherston worked a walk to load the bases. New Mexico closer Gera Sanchez got a big second out, but issued a walk to Witte to drive in the fifth run of the game for TCU. Elander just missed a two-run single as the right fielder snatched the base hit bid out of the air to end the game.
TCU drops to 20-10 on the season and 5-2 in league play. The Frogs and the Lobos will meet for the second game of the series Saturday afternoon. Matt Purke will take the mound at 4 p.m. and face the Lobos' Alexis Garza.
