Arrieta guides Frogs to 5-2 victory over UNLV

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The TCU Horned Frogs used a four-run sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and held on for the 5-2 victory over UNLV Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium in the Mountain West Preseason Tournament. Five different Frogs drove in runs for TCU. Jake Arrieta pitched 7.2 strong innings en route to his sixth win of the season.
The Frogs struck first in the top of the third inning, scoring a run on two hits. Ryan Pack started the rally as he chopped the ball over the pitcher's head, reaching first on the infield single. Bryan Kervin dropped a single into shallow right field and Pack raced to third, putting runners on the corner with only one out. Steven Trout delivered a safety squeeze up the first base line, scoring Pack to give TCU the 1-0 lead.
The Rebels tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Braden Walked broke a string of eight-straight retired by Arrieta as he laced a two-out single to center. C.J. Lang drove the ball to left field and Walker was able to score on a misplay out in left field.
TCU broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Kervin got the inning started with another bloop single to right field. Trout dropped down a successful sacrifice to move Kervin to second and Chad Huffman drove a single to center to give the Frogs the lead. UNLV third baseman Keith Smith committed his second error of the game on a ball hit by Keith Conlon and the flood gates opened. Matt Carpenter singled through the right side to plate Huffman and an Andrew Walker double allowed Conlon to score. Matt Vern rounded out the scoring with a single through the drawn infield to make it a 5-1 contest.
UNLV pushed across an unearned run in the seventh inning. Walker beat out an infield single with two outs and after an error put two runners on Kowalski singled up the middle to plate Walker with the Rebels' second run of the game.
Arrieta started for TCU and went 7.2 innings, allowing just two unearned runs on eight hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out 10. Omar Arif recorded the final four outs of the game, striking out Mike Cruz to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
The Frogs improve to 14-14 on the season and are 2-0 in Mountain West play. TCU returns to action on Saturday night when they square off against San Diego State. First pitch is slated for 9 p.m. (CST). Brad Furnish is the scheduled starter for the Frogs, while Bruce Billings will go for SDSU.
