Final Stats
DALLAS, Texas - The No. 5 TCU Horned Frogs suffered an 8-7 loss at Dallas Baptist Monday night. The Frogs had two leads but couldn't hold them as they surrendered eight two-out runs to the Patriots en route to their fourth loss of the season.
Joe Weik connected for his first home run at TCU in the loss.
Greg Holle got the start for the Frogs and lasted just 2 2/3 innings. He allowed seven runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out one. Tyler Lockwood (1-1) was the tough-luck loser in the ballgame, allowing a run on six hits. He fanned two and walked one. Erik Miller tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the Frogs.
Jerome Pena got the Frogs rolling in the first inning with a lead-off infield single. A dropped fly ball in the outfield on a ball off the bat of Bryan Holaday proved costly. Matt Curry lined a double to the left center field gap to give the Frogs a 2-0 lead.
Three more runs crossed the plate for the Frogs in the second. Aaron Schultz worked a lead-off walk and Taylor Featherston was safe on the Patriots second error of the game. Jantzen Witte reached on a perfectly placed bunt to load the bases. Holaday delivered a bases-clearing double just inside the chalk in left field to extend the Frogs' lead to 5-0.
The Patriots batted around in the third inning and tied the game at five. Dallas Baptist loaded the bases with nobody out on a pair of hits and a walk. TCU starter Greg Holle looked like he would get out of the inning without allowing a run as he fanned Ryan Behmanesh and got Austin Elkins to pop out. But Chris Haney cleared the bases with a double to right center to make it a 5-3 game. Another walk put two on for Tyler Robbins, who tied the game with a double to right.
With one swing of the bat, Weik helped the Frogs regain their lead. Josh Elander worked a lead-off walk and Weik unloaded for his first career home run to put the Frogs back on top 7-5.
Two more two outs runs crossed the plate for the Patriots as they again tied the game. For the second straight inning the Patriots got their lead-off batter on. Holle again got two quick outs, but a base hit by Behmanesh kept the inning alive. Elkins tied the game at seven with a double to right center, ending Holle's night. Lockwood came on in relief and got the final out of the inning, stranding the go-ahead run at second.
DBU's Brandon Williamson found a nice groove in the third inning as he cooled the Frogs bats, giving his team a chance. After allowing the home run to Weik, he retired the next 21 of the next 22 batters he faced, including a string of 20, to end the game. His pitching finally translated into the go-ahead run for the Patriots in the sixth inning as they struck for another two-out run.
Lockwood retired the first two batters in the inning before issuing a walk to Ryan Enos. Two batters later, the bases were loaded. Duncan McAlpine came up with the big hit, an infield single that plated the go-ahead run.
TCU falls to 15-4 on the season. The Frogs are back in action Tuesday night when they host Texas State at Lupton Stadium. Game time against the Bobcats is set for 6:30 p.m. Paul Gerrish will make his first start of the season.
