Gauchos rally for win, Frogs fall 5-4

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal a 5-4 win over the Horned Frogs in game one of a doubleheader. TCU took a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning, but the Gauchos battled back to come away with the victory. Chad Huffman had three hits in the contest to lead the Frogs offensive attack.
A.J. Knox reached on a lead-off single in the ninth inning and moved to second on a sacrifice. A walk to Patrick Rose put two on with one out. After the Gauchos loaded the bases, Sam Demel came on and struck out Chris Valaika, but walked in the tying run. Brian Lee delivered the game-winning single with a bloop single over the head of the second baseman.
For the second straight game, the Frogs jumped out to an early lead. Bryan Kervin got the rally started with a one out single. A wild pitch moved Kervin to second and Chad Huffman drove a single through the left side to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead.
The Gauchos knotted the game at one in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off home run off the bat of catcher, Matt Anderson.
The tie wouldn't hold as TCU exploded for three runs in the top of the fifth inning. UCSB starter Brian Tracy got two quick outs to open the inning, but a Huffman two-out double got the Frogs going. Keith Conlon walked and Andrew Walker dropped in a bloop single to drive in the go-ahead run. Matt Carpenter made it a 3-1 ball game with a base hit up the middle. Austin Adams drove in the fourth run of the game with a single that dropped just in fair territory in left field.
UCSB cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring a run on two hits. Dave Harrit lead off the inning with a double and moved to third on a balk. Brad Furnish induced a shallow fly ball but a push bunt single off the bat of Alden Carrithers drove home the run. Furnish retired the last two batters he faced to end the Gaucho threat.
The Gauchos picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning taking advantage of a costly error. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up 90 feet and Alden Carrithers scampered home on a passed ball.
Brad Furnish (1-3) went 8.1 innings in the loss. He struck out 10 and walked five, surrendering five runs (four earned) on eight hits.
The Frogs fall to 10-11 with the loss.
