March 18, 2007
FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 28 TCU Horned Frogs wrapped up its third series sweep of the season with a 7-2 victory over Air Force Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. The Frogs improved their home winning streak to 15 straight games dating back to last season. Andrew Walker, Corey Steglich and Bryan Kervin each tallied two hit contests.
TCU took advantage of a struggling Jake Petro in the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Steven Trout got the ball rolling with a one out single. Back-to-back walks to Keith Conlon and Austin Adams loaded the bases for Andrew Walker. He battled to a 3-2 count and eventually came through with a two-run single to right.
The Frogs tacked on two more runs in the second to extend its lead to 4-0. Steven Ellington worked a lead-off walk and moved to second on a Ben Carruthers sacrifice. Bryan Kervin dumped a single over the pitcher's head to put runners on the corner with only one out. Trout dropped down a safety squeeze to make it a 3-0 game. Shortstop Geno Salazar misplayed a ball off the bat of Conlon, allowing Kervin to score from second.
After retiring seven straight batters to open the game, TCU starter Chris Johnson ran into some trouble in the third. Daniel Walker singled with one out and moved to third on a balk and an error. Johnson bore down and froze Josh Meents for the second out. After a walk to the leadoff batter, Johnson faked to third and picked off the runner at first to end the inning.
An unearned run in the bottom of the third gave TCU a commanding 5-0 lead. With two outs, Corey Steglich doubled to center field. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an errant throw by the catcher.
A two-out rally in the fifth produced two more runs for the Frogs as they connected for three straight doubles and a single. Walker started the string of doubles and scored on Vern's double down the left field line. Vern came around to score on Steglich's second double of the game.
Johnson pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his third win of the season. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out a career-high seven batters. Derek VerHagen struck out the only two batters he faced in the game.
Air Force picked up two runs in the final two innings of the ballgame. Karl Bolt hit a two-out home run to center and a K.J. Randhawa doubled home a run in the ninth inning.
TCU improves to 15-6 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. The Frogs return to the diamond on Tuesday for a non-conference match-up against UT-Arlington. Game time at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington is set for 6:30 p.m.
