TCU Walks Away With 9-2 Victory
March 12, 2013
FORT WORTH - Eleven walks and three hit batters helped TCU overcome a 2-0 deficit to post a 9-2 win over Northwestern State Tuesday night. Dylan Fitzgerald drove in a team-high three runs.
TCU found itself in a 2-0 hole heading into the bottom of the fourth. With two outs in the frame, back-to-back walks to Davy Wright and Keaton Jones opened the door for the Frogs. An errant pick-off throw sailed into right field allowing Wright to race home with the first run of the game for TCU. Kyle Bacak looped a single to left to tie the game.
Nine Frogs came to the plate in the sixth as the Frogs scored three times to take a 5-2 lead. TCU took advantage of four walks and two defensive miscues to take control of the game. Davy Wright drew a walk to open the inning and beat the throw second on a sacrifice attempt by Keaton Jones. Bacak moved both runners up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. An error on a pop-up loaded the bases. Dylan Fitzgerald put the Frogs up 3-2 with a bases loaded walk. Back-to-back walks to Jantzen Witte and Derek Odell stretched the lead to three.
Four more runs crossed the plate for TCU in the seventh as the lead grew to seven, 9-2. Wright was hit in the arm to start the inning and moved to second on a base hit by Keaton Jones. Bacak worked a walk to load the bases. Cody Jones drew the fourth bases loaded walk of the night to make it 6-2. A balk brought home another run and a Fitzgerald base hit to center capped the scoring as two runs crossed the plate.
Trey Teakell made his first start of the season and surrendered two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out two in five innings of work.
A shaky start to the first saw the Demons score a run on four hits. They had the bases loaded with only one out when Edwin Gomez hit a ground ball to first. Kevin Cron started an inning-ending 3-6-1 double play to minimize the damage.
The lead grew in the fourth as a lead-off double came back to haunt the Frogs. Todd Wallace was standing on third with nobody out after a wild pitch. Teakell retired the next two batters, but surrendered a seeing-eye single to Nathan Lyons for a 2-0 NSU lead.
Travis Evans (1-0) came on in relief in the sixth inning and pitched three scoreless innings. He retired nine of the 11 batters he faced, walking just one and striking out two. Justin Scharf pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to lock up the victory.
TCU improves to 6-9 on the season. The midweek series against the Demons continues Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Stefan Crichton will start for the Frogs and face Northwestern State's Cody Butler.
