Rice Halts Winning Streak, Tops TCU 15-5

Houston, Texas - The No. 5 Rice Owls halted the No. 24 TCU Horned Frogs' seven-game win streak as they defeated the Frogs 15-5 Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park. Rice put up multiple runs in all but three innings and pounded out 18 hits. The Frogs bats came alive in the final three innings as they scored five runs, highlighted by two Spencer Jackson doubles. After squandering a lead-off double off the bat of Ryan Pack, the Frogs gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning to fall into an early hole. Sam Demel (2-2) got the first batter out but the Owls sent eight men to plate, scoring three runs on three hits and two walks. An Adam Hale base hit scored the first two runs of the game for Rice. The second inning played out similar to the first as the Frogs once again got the lead-off man on as Andrew Walker drew a lead-off walk, but the next three batters went down in order. The Owls kept the bats swinging as they plated three more runs on four hits, once again sending eight men to the plate. Zach Ashwood put up the first zero of the game as he came on in relief of Demel in the third, as he induced a double play ball off of Clay Reichenbach and got Tyler Henley to groundout to end the inning. The Frogs had chances to score in each of the next three innings, but Owls starter Josh Geer was equal to the task as he stranded nine runners in his six innings of work. The Owls kept putting up runs, scoring twice in the fifth, four times in the sixth and three times in the eight. TCU broke the shutout up in the seventh off of reliever Jordan Dodson. Pinch-hitter Keith Conlon reached on a base hit to start the inning and moved to third on Jackson's first double. Shelby Ford grounded out to drive in the first run of the game for TCU and Jerid Buttell hit a sacrifice fly to make it 12-2.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the ninth for the Frogs highlighted by a Matt Carpenter two-out single that scored two runs to account for the final score of 15-5. The Frogs and the Owls will play the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. Brad Furnish will take the mound for TCU as it go for its fifth straight series win. |
