TCU Walks Off With 3-2 Win In Tenth
March 10, 2013
FORT WORTH - Down to its final out, TCU rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. An error helped the Horned Frogs walked off with a 3-2 victory in the 10th to earn the series win over Pacific.
TCU had just six base runners through the first eight innings but couldn't get a ball past the Pacific defense as it turned three double plays to erase any potential threats. It was the seventh base runner allowed by the Tigers that sparked the Frogs.
Pinch hitter Kevin Daniels saw a first-pitch strike then watched four balls out of the strike zone to draw a lead-off walk. Cody Jones ripped a single through the left side to put the tying runs on base. Dylan Fitzgerald dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners 90 feet. With two outs, the Tigers intentionally walked Jantzen Witte to load the bases. Kevin Cron made the most of the opportunity as he hit a grounder through the hole on the left side, tying the game at two.
Alex Young (2-1) retired the Tigers in order in the top of the 10th, setting up the dramatic finish. More patience at the plate, this time by Davy Wright, earned the Frogs a lead-off walk. Wright battled through a seven-pitch at-bat to find his way on base. Brett Johnson blooped a single into left field to put the winning run on second. Cody Jones hit the ball sharply to the right side, but an error by the second baseman allowed the ball to skip into right field. Pinch runner Paul Hendrix raced home from second to give the Frogs the 3-2 walk-off victory.
Trevor Seidenberger was strong in his first weekend start of the season. The only two hits he allowed left the ballpark in the form of solo home runs by Jacob Goulder in the second and Jason Taasaas in the fourth. A rocky start saw the lefty walk two and hit a batter to load the bases with two outs. He battled back to strike out Taasaas looking to end the inning. Seidenberger finished his outing with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Riley Ferrell was solid for the Horned Frogs in relief as he tossed a career-high 3 1/3 innings of shutout baseball. He gave up a trio of hits, but each was erased on the base paths. Kyle Bacak threw out Erik Lockwood trying to advance on a ball in the dirt, then caught Brett Sullivan stealing in the eighth. Ferrell took care of the other base hit, picking off Taylor Murphy for the second out in the seventh. He struck out five and walked one.
Young came into the game in the top of the ninth with a pair of runners on and two outs. He did the job, striking out Murphy to end the inning. The freshman lefty retired all four batters he faced to earn the victory.
TCU improves to 5-9 on the season and earns its second series win of the season. The homestand continues Tuesday and Wednesday as the Frogs host Northwestern State for a two-game midweek series. Tuesday's contest is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start, while Wednesday's game is set for 2 p.m.
