Pacific Rallies Late For 5-3 Win
March 9, 2013
FORT WORTH - The TCU Horned Frogs battled hard to tie the game at three in the eighth, but a lead-off single in the ninth led to a two-run inning for Pacific as the Tigers rallied for the 5-3 victory Saturday.
Pacific was clinging to a 3-2 lead heading into the eighth inning when Jantzen Witte bounced a lead-off single up the middle. A sacrifice from Jerrick Suiter moved Witte into scoring position. Kevin Cron came off the bench and delivered a pinch-hit single up the middle to tie the game at three.
The tie would not hold as Taylor Murphy led off the ninth with a base hit. A sacrifice had him standing on second. After Tyler Sullivan was hit by a pitch to put two on, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Tyger Pederson came off the bench and hit a ground ball to the right side to put Pacific up 4-3. Brett Sullivan provided the insurance run with an RBI single up the middle for a 5-3 lead. Keaton Jones would work a lead-off walk, but was stranded at second to end the game.
Pacific jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, the Tigers had runners on the corners when Erik Lockwood stepped to the plate. He delivered with a double to right center to give Pacific a 2-0 lead.
TCU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Dylan Fitzgerald ignited the TCU offense with a triple to left field. Boomer White lined a single over the second baseman's head to make it a 2-1 contest.
The comeback was completed in the bottom of the second inning as the Frogs scored a run on two hits. Paul Hendrix led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground out from Keaton Jones. Kyle Bacak hit a bouncer to short and Hendrix broke on contact. He raced down the line and slid in ahead of the tag to tie the contest at two.
Brandon Finnegan worked out of a jam in the bottom of the fourth inning as he surrendered a pair of one-out singles. He got Tyler Sullivan to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep it a 2-2 game.
Pacific broke the tie in the fifth inning with a run on two hits. JJ Wagner was standing on first base with one out when Dustin Torchio lined a single to right center. Wagner was running on the pitch and scored the go-ahead run to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
TCU had runners on base in the third, fourth and seventh innings before finally cashing in in the eighth inning with the tying run
Finnegan worked five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked two in the no-decision. Nick Frey (0-1) was strong in relief, retiring 10 of the 11 batters he faced. However, the one hit Frey allowed turned into the winning run for the Tigers.
The Frogs fall to 4-9 on the year. The rubber match of the series is slated for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Trevor Seidenberger will make his first weekend start of the year.
