Baseball Edged By UT-Pan American 5-4
March 9, 2002
ROUND ROCK, Texas - A stellar pitching performance from a pair of Texas-Pan American hurlers held TCU hitless over the last six innings en route to the Horned Frogs' 5-4 loss Saturday night at Dell Diamond. The Frogs were outhit 12-4 by the Broncs in falling to 1-2 at this weekend's Express College Classic.
Texas-Pan American (3-15) struck first, reaching TCU starter Clint Mokry (Taylor, Texas/Taylor) for three runs on four hits in the first inning, giving the Broncs an early 3-0 lead.
TCU (7-11) answered with a pair of runs in both the bottom of the first and second innings to take the advantage, 4-3. Third baseman Mike Settle (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day) opened the Horned Frog scoring with a two-run double down the left field line in the first and shortstop Shaff Elkouri (Norman, Okla./Asher/Seminole J.C) added a nearly identical two-run double in the second to round out the rally.
The lead was short lived, however, as the Broncs' right fielder Tony Ortiz snuck a two-run home run just inside the right field foul pole to make it 5-4 UTPA.
From there, pitching took over as neither team was able to score the rest of the way. UTPA starter Travis Parker held the Frogs hitless over his last four innings of work to earn his first win of the season.
Mokry settled down and was equally impressive, throwing a career-high six innings and striking out a season-best three.
Additionally, both squads' bullpens were solid, as TCU reliever Ryan Weems (Roswell, N.M./Goddard/New Mexico State) kept the Frogs in the game with three innings of scoreless relief and UTPA stopper Justin Bogy notched his first save of the season with a hitless, two-inning performance.
After splitting their first two games of the Classic with a win over No. 12 Notre Dame and a loss to USC, the Frogs will look to even their weekend record Sunday evening versus Southwest Texas. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Dell Diamond.
