Horned Frogs Pummel BYU, 16-6
March 8, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU banged out 17 of its 19 hits in the first five innings as the Horned Frogs jumped out to a 12-1 lead en route to a 16-6 victory over BYU Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium and Williams-Reilly Field. With the season-best totals for runs and hits, the Frogs took the three-game weekend series from the visiting Cougars two games to one.
TCU (11-8) plated two runs in the first inning and four more in the second to take an early 6-0 advantage. After a pair of scoreless frames, BYU got on the board in the top of the fifth to make it a 6-1 contest.
However, the Frogs answered by sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs on seven hits to claim a commanding 12-1 lead. A two-run triple to left center field by Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) highlighted the six-run stanza. Chris Saenz (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) and Chris Meeks (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood) also contributed to the outburst with RBI doubles, while Jake Duncan (Marshall, Texas/Marshall) added a run-scoring single.
BYU (5-10) threatened to get back into the contest by cutting the deficit to 12-6 with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. However, the Frogs ended any hope of a Cougar comeback by tallying four more runs in the seventh to account for the final margin.
In all, every member of the TCU starting lineup collected at least one base hit. Trofholz led the Frogs' offensive efforts with a 3-for-5 performance, including the triple, two RBI and three runs scored.
Chris Osentowski (Garland, Texas/Richardson Berkner) and Clint Mokry (Taylor, Texas/Taylor) both turned in solid outings on the mound for TCU. Osentowski (3-2) struck out five and walked none in 6.2 innings, while Mokry closed out the day with 2.1 hitless innings.
TCU will look to extend its two-game winning streak on Tuesday when it travels to Lubbock for the last of five games versus Texas Tech this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Dan Law Field.
