TCU Falls To USC 8-3 to Earn Day One Split at Express College Classic
March 8, 2002
ROUND ROCK, Texas -- After making a spectacular ninth-inning comeback to upset No. 12 Notre Dame earlier in the day, TCU dropped an 8-3 decision to another perennial national power, Southern California, to earn a first-day split at the Express College Classic in Round Rock.
After USC opened the scoring by posting three runs in the third, TCU (7-10) responded with three tallies of their own an inning later to tie the score at three.
Center fielder Marshall Wilson began the rally with an RBI single to center. A batter later, Shaff Elkouri blasted his first home run of the year well over the left field wall, scoring himself and Wilson and knotting the game.
However, it was all USC (7-8) from that point on, as the Trojans scored two in the sixth and three more in the eighth to seal the victory.
TCU starter CLayton Jerome was tagged with the loss, dropping his season record to 1-2. Left fielder Terry Trofholz joined Elkouri (2-for-3) and Wilson (2-for-4) as the only Horned Frogs to collect multiple hits, going 3-for-4.
The Frogs return to Express College Classic action at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Dell Diamond versus Texas-Pan American. The contest will be a special one for TCU, as it will mark head coach Lance Brown's 900th game as a collegiate head coach, all at the helm of the Horned Frogs.
