TCU Evens Series With 10-0 Victory
March 2, 2013
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An offensive explosion and a dominating pitching performance from Preston Morrison helped lead TCU to a 10-0 victory over Jacksonville Saturday afternoon. Boomer White and Jantzen Witte homered for the Horned Frogs.
Morrison (1-1) was masterful in his third start of the season at one point retiring 13 straight. He faced the minimum in seven of the eight innings he pitched. Three times he allowed a lead-off single and three times he got the next batter to ground into a double play.
The only base runners Morrison left on came in the sixth inning as the Dolphins tallied a pair of two-out base hits. Only one runner made it to second base and none advance further than that. His final line featured no walks and three strikeouts to go along with 16 ground ball outs.
Riley Ferrell pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two and walking one.
TCU got the lead off batter on in each of the first two innings, but it was the lead-off walk to Brett Johnson that proved costly for the Dolphins. Dylan Fitzgerald blistered a line drive to center that got over the head of the center fielder for a run-scoring triple. Jerrick Suiter followed with an RBI ground out to give the Frogs a 2-0 lead.
The Horned Frogs added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Boomer White found a pitch to his liking and blasted it over the left field fence for his first career home run and a 3-0 TCU lead.
A hit batter in the sixth inning opened the floodgates for the Horned Frogs as they put a seven-spot on the board to open up a 10-0 lead. Brett Johnson was hit on the foot and moved to third on a double off the bat of White. A walk to Fitzgerald loaded the bases for Jerrick Suiter and he came through with a single through the left side to drive in a pair of runs. Keaton Jones singled to left to drive in another run.
The Dolphins went to the bullpen and Cody Jones worked a nine-pitch walk to reload the bases. After another pitching change, Jantzen Witte cleared the bases, hitting a grand slam over the left field fence to make it a 10-0 game. It was his second home run of the season.
TCU improves to 2-7 on the season. The Frogs will go for their first series victory of the season Sunday afternoon. Game time against the Dolphins is set for Noon (CST). Alex Young will make his second career start in the contest.
