TCU Falls to UTA, 10-6
March 2, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - Texas-Arlington scored six unanswered runs to end the game, erasing a two-run TCU lead and sending the Horned Frogs to a 10-6 loss to UTA Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium and Williams-Reilly Field.
Designated as the away team since the contest was originally scheduled to be played in Arlington, TCU (9-5) scored two runs in the top of the first, three in the top of the third and single run in the fourth. However, the Mavericks answered each of the Horned Frogs' challenges with runs of their own, leaving TCU with just a 6-5 lead after four stanzas.
UT-Arlington (7-8) took its first advantage of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth inning, plating three runs to go ahead 8-5. Two of the Frogs' four errors contributed to the big inning for the Mavs.
The Mavericks added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, including another unearned tally on a passed ball, to put the game away.
Besides its problems in the field, TCU was also saddled by a number of miscues on the basepaths, as the Frogs had three innings end in double plays off fly balls or line drives.
Horned Frog starter Chris Osentowski (Garland, Texas/Richardson Berkner) allowed eight runs, with only five being earned, to take the loss. The right-hander gave up nine hits in 4.2 innings and fell to 2-2 on the season.
Maverick reliever Wes Detwiler tossed three innings of two-hit ball to up his season record to 2-0. Charlie Coffey pitched the final two frames to earn his first save.
The play of center fielder Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) was the bright spot for the Frogs. The preseason all-American fell just a home run short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple, two runs scored and one driven in. Jake Duncan (Marshall, Texas/Marshall) and Mike Settle (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day) each added a pair of RBI to aid TCU's offensive efforts.
The two squads will play the rubber match of their five-game season series at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Lupton Stadium.
