TCU Wins Rain-Shortened Affair Over UTA, 4-3
March 1, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - Will Lewis' (Texarkana, Ark./Texarkana) sacrifice fly to deep center field in the bottom of the fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie and propelled TCU to a 4-3 victory over Texas-Arlington Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium and Williams-Reilly Field. The contest was halted after five innings due to rain.
After the Horned Frogs allowed three UTA runs on just two hits in the second inning to fall behind 3-1, TCU's Chris Meeks (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood) tied the game with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third. The left-handed Meeks roped a two-run homer through the fog and over the right field fence off fellow southpaw Derek Brehm to knot the contest at 3-3. The home run was Meeks' second of the season.
TCU (9-4) opened the afternoon by plating a run in its first at-bat without the benefit of a hit. Shortstop Shaff Elkouri (Norman, Okla./Asher) opened the frame with a walk, moved to second on a balk, to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI-groundout off the bat of Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) to give the Frogs the 1-0 lead after one frame.
Horned Frog starter Clayton Jerome (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) overcame the rough second inning to collect the win. The right-hander went all five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out three while walking only one to up his season record to 2-0.
Brehm picked up the loss for UTA (6-8) as he allowed four runs on five hits in the five-inning effort. He struck out six and walked four in falling to 0-2 for the year.
Weather permitting, the two squads will continue their three-game series at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Lupton Stadium.
