TCU's Rally Falls Short in 2-0 Loss
Feb. 16, 2014
FORT WORTH - TCU loaded the bases in the ninth inning but couldn't come up with the hit it needed in a 2-0 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday. Cody Jones tallied two of the Horned Frogs' three hits in the contest.
"We didn't get enough base runners today," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "We didn't get the timely hit and the balls we did square up, we hit right into the wind. (Justin) Russell did a good job. He made pitches when he needed to and so did (Adam) Maxon. Jacksonville got the big hit off of (Riley) Ferrell, so you've got to give them credit."
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Dylan Fitzgerald reached on a lead-off error and moved to second after a walk to Keaton Jones. Will Fox dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put the tying runs in scoring position. Jeremie Fagnan pinch hit and was plunked on the leg to load the bases. Dolphin pitcher Adam Maxon made the pitches he needed and retired the final two batters to end the game.
Jacksonville had the game's first scoring opportunity in the first after a one-out double and base hit had runners on the corners. Tyler Alexander worked out of the jam, getting Dylan Dillard to bounce into an inning-ending double play.
The Dolphins took the lead in the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Alexander retired the first two batters of the frame before giving up a two-out single to Drew Luther. Garret Ruckel followed with a base hit and Angelo Amendolare reached on an infield single to load the bases. Connor Gibson was hit by the pitch to drive in the go-ahead run.
After falling behind in the fifth, the Frogs threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. A two-out double and a wild pitch had Cody Jones standing on third. Dolphin starter Justin Russell got a big strikeout to keep the shutout intact.
Jacksonville wiggled off the hook again in the sixth after a lead-off error in center had Kevin Cron standing on second. Russell retired three batters around an intentional walk to Fitzgerald to get out of the inning unscathed.
In the eighth, the Dolphins added an insurance run for a 2-0 lead. A lead-off error came back to haunt the Frogs as a two-out double from Dillard drove in the base runner from first.
Alexander (0-1) started his first career game and went 4 2/3 innings. The freshman allowed a run on six hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out two. Alex Young relieved Alexander in the fifth inning. He tossed three innings and was touched for an unearned run to go along with three strikeouts. Riley Ferrell gave up a hit and walked a batter in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
TCU falls to 2-1 on the young season. The Horned Frogs will wrap up a four-game homestand Tuesday night when they host Northern Colorado. Game time is set for 6:30 at Lupton Stadium. The game will be televised on FSSW+.
