Feb. 5, 2005
Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU Horned Frog varsity baseball squad used two sixth inning runs to defeat the TCU Alumni squad, 2-0. Freshman Sam Demel pitched five scoreless innings and Spencer Jackson went 2-for-3 with and an RBI.
The Alumni used seven different pitchers to keep the Varsity off balance for much of the game. Current San Francisco Giants minor leaguer, Eugene Espineli got the start for the Alumni and pitched a scoreless inning, recording a strikeout. Also appearing on the mound for the alums were Kerry Knox, former major leaguer, Tim Mauser, Ryan Weems, Chris Osentowski, Greg Meyers and Jimmy Paige.
Demel cruised through his five innings of work, allowing only two hits and recording six strikeouts. After a lead-off hit and a walk to start the sixth, Chad Underwood came on in relief, inducing a double play ball off the bat of former TCU all-American Royce Huffman and a pop up to keep the game scoreless.
The Varsity squandered a chance to score in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with one out. Jackson led off the inning with a double followed by an infield single by J.J. Estrada. After a sacrifice by Austin Adams moved the runners up a base, Kyle Dahlberg drew a walk to load the bases. Osentowski settled in and got the next to batters out to keep the game scoreless.
The Frogs were finally able to break through in the bottom of the sixth inning off of Greg Meyers. Chad Huffman drew a lead-off walk and came around to score on a RBI-triple off the bat of Keith Conlon. Jackson followed the triple with a RBI-base hit to make it a 2-0 lead.
Shawn Ferguson came on in the top of the seventh to pick up the save. He recorded a strikeout and allowed a hit before enducing a game-ending double play. With his one inning of relief, Underwood earned the win.
The Frogs will open up their regular season on Friday, February 11 against future Mountain West foe Utah. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.
