Wheat enters his eighth year as an athletic trainer at TCU. Wheat is responsible for athletic injury recognition and care, treatment and rehabilitation of the Horned Frogs' baseball team.

Prior to his arrival at TCU, Wheat worked in the Texas Rangers organization from 1976 to 2002, serving as the head athletic trainer at the major league level for the final 11 of those years.

Wheat began his career at the Double-A level in the Texas League with San Antonio and Tulsa. He served in a variety of positions while at the Double-A level being responsible for ordering and overseeing the equipment and running the home clubhouse. On the road, Wheat was responsible for arranging all bus transportation, hotels and meal money distribution.

In 1978, Wheat moved up to the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate, serving in the same capacity as the athletic trainer, equipment manager and traveling secretary. While there, he made stops in Tucson, Charleston, Wichita, Denver and Oklahoma City.

Wheat was promoted to the big league club in 1985 as the assistant athletic trainer. He was responsible for arranging physicians visits and diagnostic appointments as well as ordering the training room supplies. He served in that role until 1992 when he was promoted to the head athletic trainer position for the Rangers. In that role, Wheat communicated with the general manager and the manager on the athletes' status and availability. He was also responsible for ordering medications and managing the department budget.

In 1995, Wheat was selected as the American League Athletic Trainer for the MLB All-Star game. 1998 brought another honor as he was chosen to the be the Athletic Trainer for the MLB All-Star Tour of Japan.

In 2003, Wheat was named the athletic trainer for Team USA at the International World Cup of Baseball in Havana, Cuba.

USA Baseball came calling again in the summer of 2009 as he was selected as the assistant athletic trainer for the 2009 World Cup squad that won gold in Europe.

Most recently, Wheat was selected by USA Baseball as the head athletic trainer for the 2010 Collegiate National Team.

Wheat joined the Ben Hogan Sports Therapy Institute in 2003, serving as the trainer for both the Fort Worth Cats baseball team and the Fort Worth Brahmas hockey club.

Wheat got his start in sports medicine as a student at the University of Texas. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.

Danny and his wife, Nancy live in Flower Mound. They have two sons, Jarrod and Jordan. Both sons attend TCU and work in the athletic department. Jarrod serves as an equipment manager for the baseball team, while Jordan is in the athletic training program.
