TCU Track & Field signs seven to National Letters of Intent
Nov. 16, 2005 FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU track and field head coach Darryl Anderson has announced the addition of seven athletes for the 2006-07 season. The early fall signing class consists of five track and field athletes from the state of Texas while the other two reside outside the state lines. Dell Guy, one of the top sprint prospects in the country, is the lone male athlete in the female-dominated signing class. He will provide the men's team added depth in the sprint events. Currently a junior at Western High School in Las Vegas, Nev., he is the reigning 4A state champion in both the 200 and 400 meters with personal records of 21.48 and 47.34, respectively. In addition, Guy holds the state record in the 400 meters. The TCU women's team will get added strength next season with the inkings of Brittany Blaylock, Neidra Covington, Rachel Joiner, Carlene Mayfield, Danielle Selner and Leslie Starnes. Each currently possesses her own impressive track record, which combined will only deepen the competitiveness level as a team. TCU notched one of its biggest recruits locally when Blaylock signed on the dotted line. A product of Sam Houston High School in Arlington, Texas, she is one of the top five sprinters in the state. Blaylock is the 5-A state champion in the 100 meters and also finished third in the 200 meters at the state meet. Her personal record in the 100 meters stands at 11.70 while her time of 23.97 is a personal best in the 200. The Frogs also grabbed two of the top distance runners in cross country in Mayfield (Keller, Texas/Keller H.S.) and Selner (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood H.S). Mayfield placed fourth at the Texas 5-A cross country meet in both her junior and senior years and was a Footlocker Cross Country national finalist. Selner, who is among the top 15 returning seniors nationally in the 1500, 3000 and 3200 events, turned in a runner-up finish in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:36.90 at the same state 5-A meet as Mayfield. In her junior year, Selner helped the Kingwood cross country champions place seventh at the state cross country meet. Coach Anderson notched some strong field performers with Neidra Covington, Rachel Joiner and Leslie Starnes joining the Frogs next season. Covington, the other signee not from Texas, is a high school All-American in Boca Ciega, Fla. A top-ranked athlete in the triple jump, she already has an impressive resume at a young age. Covington was the Junior Olympic champion in the long and triiple jumps and a USA Junior champion in the long jump. Joiner (Eldorado, Texas/Eldorado H.S.) and Starnes (Rockdale, Texas/Rockdale, H.S.) also have their own lists of accomplishments as Joiner is the reigning Texas West regional champion and record holder in the high jump with a 5-8 mark. She placed nationally at the National Junior Olympics and enters the 2006 high school track season as one of the top 10 nationally ranked seniors. Starnes, a solid pole vaulter, begins her senior campaign tied 12th nationally among high school seniors in track and field. She was named 3A all-state and 3A state runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 12-3 in the event. "We have blue chip track and field athletes who will be able to step in and help out immediately," coach Anderson said. "I feel good about our early signees. They are positive additions to the team. Also, this has elevated our women's team tremendously."
