Alayne Thompson finishes 6th at C-USA Cross Country Championships, TCU women finish 5th

Hattiesburg, Mississippi - TCU freshman Alayne Thompson posted her fifth straight top-10 finish, placing sixth in the Conference USA Cross Country Championships Saturday. Thompson's finish led the TCU women to a fifth place finish with 166 points. Sophomore Jackson Langat finished ninth individually, while the men's team finished in a tie for ninth. The Marquette women won its third consecutive team title, while Charlotte took first-place overall in the men's competition at the championships, which were held at the Van Hook Golf Course in Hattiesburg. Marquette won the women's championships with 29 points, South Florida took second with 48 and DePaul placed third with 103 points. Junior Erin Moffett of DePaul, who led from start to finish, took individual honors with a time of 20:54.68. Thompson's sixth place finish earned her second-team all-league honors, as well as being named the C-USA Freshman of the Year. She ran the 6,000 meter course in a time of 21:43.41. Freshmen Heather Isbell and Katrina Zielinski finished 21st and 22nd, respectively. Isbell posted a time of 22:47.94, while Zielinski ran the course in a time of 22:52. Senior Shannon McKinney finished 45th with a time of 23:42.04, while freshman Katie Cosgrove placed 79th with a time of 25:15.81. "The women ran very well, especially for a young group," said cross country coach Derek Koonts. "Alayne (Thompson) had another good performance to earn Conference USA freshman of the year honors."
Charlotte took the men's team title with 53 points, followed by Marquette with 71 and Cincinnati finished with 81 points. South Florida's Andrew Smith captured the individual title with a time of 24:36.71. Langat earned second-team All-C-USA honors with his ninth-place finish. He ran the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:21.13. Sophomore Steven Lenney finished 50th with a time of 27:08.01. Freshman Brad Maciulewicz finished 59th with a time of 27:40.27, Case Martinec finished 74th with a time of 28:17.01, while Raita Yamanouchi finished 75th with a time of 28:20.48.
The Frogs will next compete in the NCAA South Central Regional Cross Country Championships in Waco on November 16. |
