Men and women run to second-place finishes at North Texas Invitational
Sept. 9, 2006 DENTON, Texas - The TCU men's and women's cross country teams each earned second-place finishes on Saturday at the North Texas Invitational held at the Eagle Point Cross Country Course. Competing in the second meet of the season, TCU had three runners place in the top 10, led by Calandra Stewart, who placed third in the women's 2-mile race. On the men's side, TCU accumulated 72 points to tie host North Texas for second place. Baylor won the meet with 16 points. "We had a good race today," head coach Eric Heins said. "We had a great pack of runners and that is what we believe will really separate us as a team." Leading the Horned Frogs was Matt Manly, who finished ninth out of 39 runners in the men's 4-mile race in a time of 20:54.81. The six other TCU runners stayed close in a pack and each finished between 14th and 21st. Pacing the pack of Horned Frogs was Steven Solazzo, who finished 14th in a time of 21:20.65. Solazzo was followed by Cody Cook (21:24.86) and J.T. Reinert (21:31.77), who placed 15th and 16th, respectively. Placing 18th was Alex Morris, who ran a 21:35.03. Houston Bolin (21:46.49) and Brad Maciulewicz (21:46.69) rounded out TCU's lineup, placing 20th and 21st, respectively. Four Baylor individuals finished 1-4, led by Rob Morrow, who won the 4-mile race in a time of 19:59.15. On the women's side, TCU totaled 51 points and finished second to Baylor, which won the 2-mile race with 20 points.
"We were a little disappointed with how we ran today," Heins said. "We wanted to get out of the gate and compete well all the way through the race, but we only had Carlene (Mayfield) up with the Baylor runners at the half-mile mark. It was a good experience for us because we have to learn to get out front earlier in the race."
Following Stewart's third-place showing in a time of 11:06.78, Carlene Mayfield placed fifth with a time of 11:12.32. Placing 13th and 14th for TCU were McKale Davis (11:42.88) and Danielle Selner (11:46.77). Halie Bullin placed 16th with a time of 11:48.35. Ashley Young finished 23rd with a time of 12:09.17. Young was followed by Cassie Hostick, who finished 24th in a time of 12:12.19. Also competing for TCU was Shannon Andrew who finished 40th in a time of 13:11.19. Ashley Millerick finished 44th, while Amanda Foust placed 45th and Amber Carlisle finished 50th. Baylor's Nichole Jones won the individual title with a time of 10:53.85. TCU returns to action on Sept. 16, with the men's team competing at the Texas A&M Invitational. |
