Frogs Fall in Final Road Match
EL PASO, Texas (Nov. 18) The TCU volleyball team ended its road scheduled with a 3-1 loss to the UTEP Miners at Memorial Gymnasium. The win improved UTEP's record to 14-13 (6-8 WAC) and ran their current win streak to five games. The loss lowered TCU's record to 14-17 (5-9 WAC) and made it eight losses in their last ten matches.
An 8-2 lead and a .350 hitting percentage was to much for the Frogs to overcome in game one as they fell 15-8. The Miners took another early lead in game two, 5-0, before the Frogs tallied their first point. UTEP increased the lead to 12-5 but could not put the Frogs away as TCU posted a 12-3 run to take game two and even the match at one game apiece. Games three and four proved to be the same as UTEP posted early leads that the Frogs could not overcome. The Miners closed the Frogs out with a 15-4 win in game three and a 15-9 win in game four.
"We have too many players trying to hard to win and it's keeping us from executing on offense," said head coach Sandy Troudt. "We just need to relax and play good volleyball."
TCU committed 32 attack errors in the match resulting in a .130 hitting percentage. Marci King led the Frogs with 17 kills while Lindsay Hayes, Stephanie Watson and Jenn Cuca each recorded eight digs.
"I was very pleased with how well Marci and Jenn (Cuca) played tonight," said Troudt. "Unfortunately, we could not keep our from falling behind and that makes it tough to win on the road"
King hit .361 (17-4-36) for the match while Cuca registered a .462 (7-1-13) hitting percentage and eight digs in just three games.
TCU ends the road portion of its schedule having won just three matches (Stephen F. Austin, Tulsa and Sam Houston State) while losing 11, including eight of their last nine.
"We really thought this would be a break out year for us on the road," said Troudt. "Our road record and our recent road trip doesn't necessarily show it, but we did have some success on the road this season."
TCU will wrap up its season in the Rickel Center this week as they take on San Jose State on Monday at 7:00 p.m. and Fresno State on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
