Volleyball Drops Pair at TCU Invitational
Sept. 13, 2002
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Volleyball team (5-4) dropped a pair of hard fought matches on Friday at the TCU Invitational. The Frogs fell in three to San Jose State, while they battled in four only to come up short against Stephen F. Austin. Sophomore Dominika Szabo earned her eighth and ninth career double-doubles during the day.
The Frogs met up with San Jose State in the first match of the tournament. The entire match was a back and forth battle with neither team breaking out to a great lead. San Jose State was able to pick up game one by a 30-26 score. TCU played even tougher in the second game as they fell by the minimum two points in the 30-28 loss. The Spartans won game three, 30-24, to take home the match victory.
Szabo led the Frogs in both kills (12) and digs (10) en route to her eighth career double-double. She also posted 27 attacks for the match. Junior Tori Barlow was the assist leader for the eighth time this season when she gave the Frogs 34 for the afternoon. Freshman Carissa Mills earned two service aces, while sophomore Amber Sims had five blocks.
"We played well, in terms of defense and digging balls," said head coach Prentice Lewis. "We were competitive, but we need to finish games. We got to 20 and 21 [points] and didn't finish. Once we play to 30, then we'll really battle with teams."
Against Stephen F. Austin, the Frogs hung tight in game, but let it slip away late as the Ladyjacks took game one, 30-28. The second game was the Ladyjacks' from the beginning as they controlled the pace, hitting .531 (18 kills, one error, 32 attacks) to win 30-20. TCU battled back to claim the third game, 30-26, and force the fourth game. The two teams went the extra distance in the fourth, as neither team could take a decided advantage before SFA managed to capitalize on Frog errors to win 32-30.
Szabo again led the Frogs in kills and attacks, with 18 and 48 respectively. Barlow posted 46 assists and four aces in the four-game loss to lead the Frogs in those categories. Szabo and senior Jenn Cuca each tallied 15 digs during the match. Mills and freshman Erin Estep notched five blocks apiece.
The Invitational continues on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. meeting between San Jose State and Miami (Ohio). TCU will play their sole match-up of the day against Miami (Ohio) at 3:00 p.m., while San Jose State and Stephen F. Austin will play in the 5:30 p.m. nightcap. All matches will be played in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
