Frater places sixth overall in men's 100 in Beijing
Aug. 16, 2008
BEIJING, China - Former Flyin' Frog Michael Frater just missed earning a medal in the men's 100-meter finals on Saturday night at the 2008 Olympics.
Frater finished sixth overall with a personal-best time of 9.97 seconds, while his teammate Usain Bolt recorded a new world record in the event, clocking a blistering time of 9.69 seconds. In the semifinals of the men's 100, Frater qualified for the finals with a time of 10.01 seconds just edging fellow Horned Frog Kim Collins, who posted a time of 10.05, but failed to make the finals. "I didn't make it. One spot behind is the worst place to be, but that's life and I can't complain with that," Collins told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. 2008 All-American Virgil Hodge clocked a time of 11.45 in quarterfinal action of the women's 100 meters, but failed to make the semifinals at National Stadium.
Overall, Hodge, who is running for St. Kitts & Nevis, crossed the finish line in fourth-place in heat No. 1. Earlier in the day, the six-time All-American recorded a time of 11.48 to qualify for the quarterfinals and finish fourth overall in heat No. 3. "It was pretty good. My start wasn't as good as I wanted it, but I came back in the last 50. As I looked over the race, it seemed like I was leaning too much into it, trying to reach for the line," Hodge told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram following her opening round in Beijing. "The 100 is just really something for me to just warm up for the 200, which is my main race."
Hodge and Collins will continue action in the men and women's 200 later this week at National Stadium.
