FORT WORTH – TCU’s NCAA Champion Charles Silmon has been named one of 10 semifinalists for The Bowerman, the award presented each year to college track and field’s most outstanding male and female performers. This marks the second consecutive year that TCU has had a semifinalist for The Bowerman, with 2012 NCAA indoor and outdoor long jump champ Whitney Gipson making the list last season.
Though Silmon has not made an appearance on The Bowerman watch list all season, his slot among the 10 best men’s track and field athletes in the nation is deserved. Last week at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Silmon came out on top of the fastest 100-meter dash final in NCAA history. The senior had to come from behind, but in the end he came out on top in a wind-aided mark of 9.89 seconds.
The time is tied for the fastest all-conditions 100-meter dash in NCAA Championships history. The loaded final featured three men under 10 seconds and required a mark of 10.01 just to finish in fifth. Every finishing position first through eighth either tied or was faster than the previous best time for that finishing spot in NCAA history.
The win also finished a season where Silmon went undefeated against collegians in the 100-meter dash. The only men to finish ahead of Silmon in the 100 were three U.S. Olympians at the Texas Relays, and he still ran a wind-aided 9.94 seconds.
Silmon also made the final of the 200-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay, but had to pull out of his remaining competition.
An eight-time All-American, Silmon went to the NCAA Championships as the top seed in the West Region in the 100 and 200-meter dash and as part of the 4x100-meter relay. At the NCAA West Preliminaries in Austin, he ran legal PRs of 10.03 in the 100 and 20.23 in the 200 which at the time moved him into the top-10 of the world for both events.
At the Big 12 Championships in his hometown of Waco, Silmon earned the High Point Award for his victories in the 100 and 200-meter dash and as part of the 4x100-meter relay. His efforts helped him earn the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Most Outstanding Performer of the Year Award from the conference.
During the indoor season, Silmon finished third at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter dash and claimed the Big 12 title in the 60 as well. Silmon finished his TCU career with 12 conference championships across indoor and outdoor.
The three finalists for The Bowerman will be announced on July 10. The winner will be announced at a dinner during the USTFCCCA Convention in December.
Silmon will compete at the USA Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa beginning on Thursday and running through Sunday.
