Gipson Named Mountain West Outdoor Athlete of the Year
June 14, 2012
FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior Whitney Gipson was honored Thursday as the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year.
Gipson soared 22 feet, 4 ½ inches on her second attempt last Thursday night to capture her second-straight NCAA title. By doing so, Gipson became the first female student-athlete in TCU history to win an outdoor crown and posted the second-best jump in conference history. She is also the only female student-athlete to ever win back-to-back championships in program history. In all, Gipson is the fourth NCAA Outdoor Champion all-time and the first since Khadevis Robinson won the men's 800 meters in 1998. Gipson joined some rare company, as she is only the second student-athlete in TCU history to win both an indoor and outdoor crown, joining former Frog great Raymond Stewart, who did so in 1989.
Gipson will next be in action at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. The trials will begin on Friday, June 22 at Hayward Field.
