TCU track sweeps Mountain West Conference weekly honors
April 26, 2006
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU freshman Tommy Killen and sophomore Virgil Hodge have been named Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively. This is the first career weekly honor for Killen, while Hodge garners her second weekly accolade of the season. Killen, a New Iberia, La., native, was the top collegiate finisher (second overall) in the men's discus throw at last weekend's TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. His throw of 189'-11.00 (57.90m) is a new career-best and NCAA regional qualifying mark. It is also the second-best distance in the MWC this season and is currently the 13th best in the nation, as well as ranking fifth in the Midwest Region. Killen is currently the lone freshman ranked in the top-15 nationally in the men's discus. Hodge, from St. Kitts, Carribean, won a pair of individual gold medals at the TCU Invitational last weekend, posting regional qualifying marks in both events, and ran the second leg of two winning relay teams. She won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.34, which is .01 seconds off of her MWC season-best time and fourth best all-time league mark. She then clocked a time of 22.87 in the 200-meter dash, which is the top time in the league this season, the second fastest time in MWC history and currently the third fastest time in the nation. Hodge concluded her weekend, running the second leg in both the women's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay squads which finished in MWC season-best times of 44.34 and 3:36.63, respectively. The Horned Frogs' time in the 4x100 is the second fastest in conference history, while their time in the 4x400 ranks fourth on the all-time MWC charts.
