Lawrence Receives Conference Accolades
Feb. 5, 2002
Brandal Lawrence has been selected as the Conference USA Track & Field co-Male Athlete of the Week for the weekend of February 2, the conference office announced today.
Lawrence, a junior from DeSoto High School, posted a TCU indoor school record triple jump of 15.97 meters (52-04.75), as he improved his NCAA provisional mark at the Third Annual Tyson Pre-National Indoor Classic, held in front of a meet record crowd of 4,386 at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Saturday. His previous indoor best was 15.69 meters, set at the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock earlier this year. The old school indoor record was 15.96 meters (52-04.50), set by Abdul Rasheed last March. Lawrence finished sixth in the meet on Saturday, but had the second longest triple jump of the collegians entered in the meet.
Lawrence was joined by Solomon Kandie for the conference honors. Kandie, a senior from Tulane, posted an NCAA qualifying mark in the mile run at the Tyson Pre-National Indoor Classic.
The Frogs have now earned Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors in track for three straight weeks. Demario Wesley earned the honors on January 22 and Eliud Njubi and Monica Twum swept the awards a week ago.
Lawrence and the rest of the Flyin' Frogs will be in action again this weekend when they take part in the Houston Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday, February 8-9.
