Harris Honored by Conference USA
Jan. 22, 2003 TCU's Jerry Harris, a junior college transfer from Wallace State Community College, was named the Conference USA men's indoor track & field Athlete of the Week for the weekend of January 18, the conference office announced today. Harris turned in an NCAA provisional mark by winning the 400 meter dash at the Oklahoma Indoor Classic, logging a time of 47.50 seconds. He also ran the anchor leg on TCU's mile relay team, which posted a winning time and NCAA provisional mark of 3:12.70. Harris and the rest of the Flyin' Frogs will be in action again on Saturday at the Houston Indoor Invitational on the University of Houston campus. The venue is also the site of the 2003 Conference USA Indoor Championships, which will be held February 28-March 1. "We're looking for continued progress and keeping our fingers crossed that everyone stays healthy," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "On the men's side, we may not run our top 4x4 relay team. We don't want to overuse some runners early in the season and will give the other people vying for a spot on that number one unit a chance to compete. Otherwise it will be the second verse, same song as at Oklahoma. We will just try to improve on last week's performance. Hopefully we will be better simply because it's the second time out," he added. The TCU Flyin' Frogs men's team is ranked seventh in the country this week, according to the weekly Trackwire 25 poll. According to the poll, the Frogs figure to score 24 points at the NCAA meet, just four points behind third-ranked South Carolina. LSU, the defending outdoor national champion, continues to hold the top spot with 69 points, followed by Arkansas with 56. Last week, TCU was ranked in a tie for seventh place with 22 points. The Trackwire 25 projects a hypothetical score for the NCAA meet, factoring in injury reports and other variables supported by information gathered from coaches and NCAA-qualifying competitions across the country.
