TCU Women Win College Division 4x4 at Penn Relays
April 30, 2005
Philadelphia - The TCU women's 4x400 meter relay unit won the College Division title at the 111th running of the Penn Relays, completed today at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
The TCU quartet of Deborah Jones, Jamee Jones, Donita Harmon and Nathandra John led wire-to-wire in posting a winning time of 3:36.43 to edge LSU (3:36.78). Nebraska was third, followed by Penn State.
"The relay was held in a downpour, so it was a huge win for our women," said TCU head coach Darryl Anderson. "They have every reason to fold, but got it done."
The TCU men put together a strong effort in the Championship Division of the 4x100 meter relay, placing fourth with a season-best time of 39.95 seconds. The foursome of Delwayne Delaney, Cleavon Dillon, Jay Cooper and Bradley Reedfinished behindonly traditional powers LSU (39.06), Florida (39.25) and Tennessee (39.88).
"They did a good job in front of a very loud and packed house," said Anderson. "We have a young team with two freshmen and a sophomore along with Cleavon and they were able to get the stick around the track. We tried to break up the Southeastern Conference trio, but could not quite catch Tennessee."
In the only other action involving a TCU athlete on Saturday, freshman Joe Brown placed 12th in the javelin with a best toss of 54.34 meters (178-03).
Some of the Frogs will compete next Saturday at the UTA Open, which will be the final tuneup prior to the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held in Houston, May 12-14.
