April 3, 2003
TCU junior Mary Kinyanjui took the silver medal in the 5,000 meter run, highlighting TCU's efforts on the second day of the 76th running of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, completed Thursday.
Kinyanjui completed the 5K distance in a time of 17:18.65. The NCAA regional qualifying mark is 17 minutes flat. TCU freshman Alayne Thompson finished 10th in the same race with a time of 18:00.54.
TCU also had a pair of runners compete in the 400 meter hurdles. Nathaniel Garcia won his heat with a time of 52.93 seconds, but placed 11th overall and missed the cut for the finals by six-tenths of a second. Freshman Julie Curtis turned in a time of 1:02.77 to place 26th on the women's side.
"Mary ran a good race in the 5,000," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "I thought Nate ran well, considering it's the first time he's competed in that event this season. Julie looked good for the first five hurdles before tying up a little at the end."
In action late Wednesday, TCU freshman Katrina Zielinski finished fourth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 37:55.76.
The meet continues Friday and Saturday at Mike E. Myers Stadium in Austin.
