March 16, 2002
The TCU Flyin' Frogs got off to a fast start in the first outdoor meet of the season, recording five provisional NCAA marks in the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational, held on the LSU campus today. This is also the site of the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be competed May 29-June 1.
The Frogs got NCAA provisional marks from Michael Frater in the 100 meters (10.22), Jermaine Joseph in the 200 meters (20.68), Brandal Lawrence in the triple jump (15.93 meters or 52-3 1/4) and from both the men's 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams (39.45 and 3:07.22 respectively).
"This was a great first meet," said TCU Head Coach Monte Stratton. "This is the kind of performance we thought we were capable of during the indoor season. We finally put some things together today. It was a great start to the outdoor season."
In addition to Frater, Joseph and the two relay victories, TCU recorded a win in the women's 100 meters, with La' Toya White taking the top honors in 11.71, and went one-two in the women's 800 meter dash, with Perhona Tomlin (2:10.50) and Justina Malone (2:12.38) leading the pack. The women's 4x100 meter relay team of La' Toya White, Monica Twum, Tiffany Starts and Chaunte Baldwin just missed an NCAA provisional mark, finishing second in a time of 45.13, just three one-hundreths of a second off the qualifying time.
The Frogs will take next week off before taking part in the UTA Invitational in Arlington on March 30.
