FORT WORTH – TCU earned two second-place finishes in the field on the first day of the TCU Invitational from the Lowdon Track and Field Complex. TCU freshman Makena Schroder took down the school record en route to her runner up finish in the women’s javelin throw with a 148-9 (45.34m). Megan Smith took second in the women’s discus with a toss of 158-2 (48.22m).
“Overall I was pretty pleased,” TCU associate head coach and throws coach John Kenneson said. “The athletes had to deal with some real tough wind conditions today.”
Making her TCU debut, Schroder did not waste time taking out TCU’s record in the women’s javelin as her first throw was her best throw at 148-9 (45.34m). She did not foul on any of her six attempts and all six we of at least 41.50m. The TCU coaching staff is pleased with her starting point for the season.
“Makena is a real talent and this is a great start for her,” Kenneson noted. “The wind also effected her, but she competed extremely well. I thought she handled herself really well and handled herself greatly.”
Smith, coming off a fifth place finish in the women’s shot put at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, had two good throws to start of the discus competition. It was her third throw that was the biggest and the one that earned her second place with a mark of 158-2.
“Megan Smith did nice in her event,” Kenneson said. “She is throwing over eight feet further than she was at this time last season. It is the start of a productive outdoor season. I feel good about the direction she is going in.”
TCU also had competitors in the women’s hammer throw, with Kelsey Samuels leading the way in eighth place.
Action at the TCU Invitational continues tomorrow with field events starting at 10:30 a.m. with the men’s discus and the men’s high jump. Action on the track begins at 1 p.m. with the women’s 4x100-meter relay.
