Edwards, Men's 4x4 Set Automatic Marks
Feb. 15, 2003
Aundre Edwards set a school record in the long jump, highlighting TCU's performance at the Razorback-Tyson Invitational held at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas on Saturday. Edwards, a junior from Kingston, Jamaica, finished fourth in the invitational long jump competition with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 7.87 meters or 25 feet, 10 inches, one-half inch further than Cleavon Dillon's school record set last season. Edwards, who finished fifth in at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships a year ago, surpassed his previous indoor career best of 7.80 meters, set at the Houston Indoor Classic on January 25. The TCU men's 4x400 relay unit also turned in its best effort of the season with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 3:06.23. The quartet of Brandon Simpson, Jabari Fields, Jackson Langat and Jerry Harris finished second in the event behind Kansas City CC, outrunning foursomes from Florida, Baylor, Auburn and Mississippi State. Harris's anchor leg was hand-timed in 44.9 seconds. Michael Frater competed in the 60 meter dash, but did not reach the finals after posting a time of 6.76 seconds in the prelims. Cleavon Dillon placed ninth in the long jump competition with a best leap of 7.26 meters (23-10).
"Overall it was a good weekend for us," said TCU head coach Monte Stratton. "Aundre Edwards really stepped it up in the long jump. The competition in that event was probably stronger than it will be at the national meet. His effort bodes well for later in the season.
The Frogs turned in six NCAA provisional marks on Friday: Michael Frater (6.66), Monica Twum (7.35) and La' Toya White (7.42) in the 60; Jermaine Joseph (21.10) in the 200; Jackson Langat (1:48.42) in the 800; and Brandal Lawrence (15.77m) in the triple jump. The Frogs will not be in action again until February 28-March 1 when they will travel to Houston to take part in the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The TCU men have captured three straight conference indoor titles. TCU's RESULTS (Saturday): 60m Dash Prelims: 14. Michael Frater 6.76. 4x400m Relay: 2. TCU (Brandon Simpson, Jabari Fields, Jackson Langat, Jerry Harris) 3:06.23 (NCAA Automatic Mark). Long Jump: 4. Aundre Edwards 7.87m (25-10) (NCAA Automatic Mark - School Record); 9.
